Intro and Shake Down Cruise!

Welcome Family and Friends to Rick and Jeanne's Great RV Adventure! We credit the name of this Blog (The Vander Glad Big Adventure) to Annie and Gary Garten who always refer to us as the Vander Glads! 

Many of you have heard about this for SO LONG, I thought I would create this blog for you to follow us. That way, you can check in when and IF you want (there may even be a way to be notified if there is a new post).  We started planning this month-long trip over a year ago bc the National Parks book reservations that far in advance. With Covid, things have been a little in flux and we have had to be flexible. Good lesson for me! We leave on Friday, August 14 and return September 12th. We plan to visit Glacier (with a guided trip into the new Sperry Lodge), continuing onto Yellowstone and then Grand Teton. We will see some long-time friends of mine in Jackson WY (where Rick hopes to fly fish and maybe I will tag along and try to learn), and hit Teddy Rosevelt National Park on the way out and the Badlands and Mt. Rushmore on the way home. 

A few weeks ago we had our first 'shake down cruise' to Little Sandy Bay on the southern shore of Lake Superior. We used everything to make sure it worked; from the shower to the outdoor grill to the moped to get to our first trailhead (above the Ice Caves). So far we have learned that the shower is very small but great hot water, that my ideal moped speed is between 35 and 40 mph (there may or may not be a difference of opinion on that topic!), but we both agreed that sitting out under the stars watching the campfire burn is a great way to spend an evening. We met a fun young family with 3 young kids in a fancy RV, watched a group of 'professional' tent-campers in the site across from us who knew lots of great pro-tips and observed a group of sedentary immobilized rv-ers who looked like they enjoyed watching the world go by..... day and night!  













So wish us luck!  Rick says he bought 'burial insurance' but not sure just whose burial the insurance is for!!!

Day 13: Hike the South Rim of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and Explore the Norris Geyser Basin

 Today was a day of extraordinary sites!  First The Lower and Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River. We hiked the South Rim to see both. The setting of these Falls is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. So not only do you have the amazing cliffs and colors of the Canyon but there are these amazing Falls also.  Then we 'moped-ed' over to Norris Geyser Basin to see some Geysers! As we drove, all the Harley Guys (and yes they all rode Harleys and yes they were all guys) did the 'left-hand-hey-there-fellow-motorcyclist wave'. I felt so included in our new culture. Rick said it was bc they were all jealous of our Piaggio!  Also along the way there was a slowdown ahead. We braked and on our right side, less than 10 ft away was, a HUGE bison, strolling on the road. I tried to get my phone out to snap a photo, but was too slow. We didn't want to antagonize him in anyway, so kept moving. (And yes, it was a him!) All in, we rode the moped almost 40 miles!  But back to the Gey...

Day 23: Kayaking on Jackson Lake and A Story That Makes Me So Happy!

Before I begin about our 23rd day, something happened today that MADE ME SO HAPPY. Our neighbors in the RV Park are from Southern California and were delightful. It was a couple a little younger than Rick and I, Mark and Michelle, and Mark's Mom and Step-dad. We were given fresh homegrown tomatoes by the Grandma and they were delicious. We had so much fun getting to know them and Rick was so jealous of the fancy, big and beautiful rig they had......not to mention the brand new Jeep they were towing! To be fair, I was lusting after Michelle's beautifully manicured hands and feet. Sigh!  I haven't COMPLETELY gone off to the other side!!!  When Mark, told me what he did, I didn't really 'get' what he did but it sounded similar to another friend's description of his business. Day 3: Wibaux to West Glacier MT (Total Mileage 562)

 Well, today was a DRIVE DAY, NINE HOURS!!! The 'close-up and get going' part of our adventure is getting down to a science. Rick takes care of the exterior and I button down the interior. We were off.  The drive was mostly monotonous , with grasshoppers attacking our windshield. We had to stop more to clean our windshield than to fuel. See grill below...remember the one moth from yesterday?  We traveled most of the day on Hwy 2 (yes, Sally Weideman Mitchell) and it was wheat as far as the eye could see. We traveled through three Reservations. Thank goodness the speed limit was 80!!! Then, when we wondered if there even WAS a Glacier Park, we saw it in the distance!  So beautiful!! We got to our RV park in West Glacier and set up camp. Our new Trailer Friends (next door) are from Marshall MN!   The sunset was gorgeous, the salmon perfect and the Solo FirePit was a great end to our arrival!   Tomorrow we start hiking!  Thanks for all your comments! ...
